About Us
BJ’s Print & Design Ltd is a family-run business with over 45 years of experience in the industry, who offer a wide variety of services.
It all started back in 1987… Bob Sandall (MD) left EMAP after working for them for 29 years. He joined a small repro company called ‘Colortone’ and moved into the present location at Unit 5, Gwash Way, Ryhall Road, Stamford. He was later joined by some of his old work colleagues from EMAP in 1988, which enabled the company to expand and offer a wider range of services in repro, typesetting, planning & scanning.
In 1992 the company diversified into the printing side. New premises in North Street, Stamford were found, and a Heidelberg MO 4 colour printing press was bought along with various finishing equipment so the company could offer a full service. This was all branded under a new name of BJ’s Print & Design Ltd.
For several years both Colortone and BJ’s ran alongside each other, but due to technology changing, the printing side became the dominant company. It was therefore decided to close Colortone and run everything under the one name of BJ’s Print & Design Ltd.
In 2003 a computer-to-plate (CTP) system was installed. This enabled the company to plan PDFs on the Apple Macs and send them straight to plate, eliminating the film processing side. This meant jobs could be made ready for the press much quicker, reducing the turnaround time.
In Feb 2009 the decision was taken to upgrade the Heidelberg MO press. Although it was the Rolls Royce in its day, technology had moved on enough to warrant the change. After much deliberation, a Ryobi 780E, B2, 4 colour printing press was bought, along with a new booklet maker. This enabled everything from North Street to be moved up to the Gwash Way site, where it is all now held under one roof.
Over the years the partners have retired and Bob now runs the company with his family and a team of workers, who together offer a friendly, professional service.
